SPOKANE, WA — Slick conditions likely played a role in crashes involving up to 70 vehicles outside Spokane Tuesday afternoon. According to the Washington Department of Transportation, eastbound and westbound lanes were blocked due to multiple spinouts on Interstate 90, in the Geiger Heights area, just before 3 p.m.

According to Washington State Patrol, all westbound lanes reopened at 5:30 p.m, and one eastbound lane remained closed. The Seattle Times reports traffic in the area continued to crawl early Tuesday evening, and removing all the vehicles was expected to take considerable time. WSP said all available tow trucks in the region responded to the scene.

KXLY-TV reported heavy snow and icy roads were a factor, and 60 to 70 vehicles were involved. Several people were taken to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries. KHQ-TV reported traffic impacts were expected to continue into the evening.
