6 Weeks Of Lane Closures Coming To I-5 In Tacoma
Starting as soon as Sept. 21, drivers will endure six weeks of lane closures near the Tacoma Mall before new HOV lanes open.
TACOMA, WA — Beginning as early as Saturday, WSDOT crews will close the far left lane of I-5 near the Tacoma Mall for a six-week sign installation project.
Weather permitting, work crews will close the left lane between South 38th Street and South 56th Street along the southbound lanes. That will create a temporary work zone for crews to install HOV signs.
That means I-5 will be reduced to three travel lanes. At the same time, WSDOT will open an auxiliary lane for drivers merging onto I-5 from South 38th Street. But commuters should still prepare for longer delays during morning and evening rush hours.

The lane closures are part of the long-running project to extend HOV lanes from SR 16 to Tacoma. Those lanes should open later this fall, according to WSDOT.
