Flu Activity Continues To Slow In Pierce County: Report

It seems fewer people died or were hospitalized with influenza-like illnesses over the past week in Pierce County.

TACOMA, WA - While the latest influenza report appears to show a slowdown in cases around Pierce County, flu activity in the region remains elevated, according to the Tacoma-Pierce County Health Department.

Over the past week, one person died and another 19 people were hospitalized in Pierce County with influenza-like illnesses (ILI), increasing the total number of people sickened by flu to 623 and the total number of deaths to 35 since Oct. 22, 2018.

In its April 9 update, the Health Department also reported the deaths of another 21 people statewide as a result of complications caused by ILI, raising the total number of deaths in Washington this season to 160 people.

Emergency room, urgent care, and primary care physician visits for people sickened by influenza reportedly decreased over the past week as well, though overall activity remains elevated, health officials said.

Activity statewide is reportedly considered moderate at this time, while national activity is listed as elevated.
