UNIVERSITY PLACE, WA — City residents were advised last week of the police department's new digs within the University Place Civic Building, which is reportedly part of the department's effort to improve community access to police services.

The UPPD's move to 3612 Drexler Dr. W. was announced May 1 as part of the city's regularly-released community newsletter, which noted the move was part of a larger transition for all city staff from their former offices in Windmill Village.

"It only took us 25 years to get every one in one place, but this move comes at the right time,” City Manager Steve Sugg joked in his newsletter comment. "As interest continues to grow for additional development opportunities in and around the Village at Chambers Bay, it made sense for us to now make the move we knew would eventually take place."

The new UPPD lobby and office will offer increased walk-in hours from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday through Friday, except on holidays, for anyone who needs to use police services, officials said.

"This is all part of our efforts to provide more opportunities for us to engage with the public and be present and visible to the community," Police Chief Mike Blair said.
