Retired Maj. Gen. Tim Lowenberg Dies At University Place Home

Lowenberg commanded Washington's Air Force and Army national guard from 1999 to 2012.

UNIVERSITY PLACE, WA - Retired Maj. Gen. Tim Lowenberg, who commanded the state's Air Force and Army national guard from 1999 to 2012, died at his University Place home on Sunday, according to the Tacoma News-Tribune. Lowenberg's time as state Adjutant General coincided with wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Lowenberg, 70, was most recently employed as a vice president at the Gordon Thomas Honeywell governmental affairs firm. He began working there in 2012 after retiring from the National Guard.

"Major General Tim Lowneberg lived a life of service to his state and his country," Gov. Jay Inslee said in a statement Monday. "As Adjutant General, he stood up for our citizen soldiers called on repeatedly to serve in Iraq and Afghanistan."

Lowenberg graduated from University of Iowa in 1971 with a law degree and later studied at Harvard, Syracuse University, and the Naval Postgraduate School. He came to the Tacoma area from Iowa in the early 1970s to teach at the University of Puget Sound. He also taught law at Seattle University.

In addition to serving as Adjutant General, Lowenberg was the Homeland Security Adviser to the state overseeing the state's emergency management plans.
