Bothell Police Identify Officer Killed In Shooting
Officer Jonathan Shoop was killed in a shootout with a suspect late Monday night.

BOTHELL, WA — One Bothell police officer was killed and another injured in a shooting late Monday night.
Now, the Bothell Police Department has identified the fallen officer as Jonathan Shoop. Shoop had joined Bothell Police early last June after serving in the United States Coast Guard. The department says he will be remembered as "a dedicated officer who served the City of Bothell with professionalism and compassion" who was well-liked by his peers and his community and who will be dearly missed.
Shoop is survived by his fiancé, mother and two brothers. A memorial and fundraisers to support his family are both being planned, with more details expected over the coming days.

Shoop was killed in an incident that started at around 9:40 p.m. Monday. Bothell Police Department officers tried to pull over a black sedan on SR 522. But instead of stopping, the driver led officers on a short chase heading west. That chase came to a halt when the sedan hit a pedestrian riding a scooter in a crosswalk, then crashed through the center median in the 10300 block of Woodinville Drive.
After the car stopped, witnesses report the driver jumped out of his car, handgun drawn, and opened fire on the officers. The officer in the patrol car's passenger seat returned fire, and the shootout ended with both Bothell officers hit, and the suspect fleeing on foot.

As other police departments responded to the scene, they found the injured officers. One, Officer Shoop, had already passed away, the other survived but needed to be rushed to Harborview Medical Center for emergency treatment, as did the pedestrian hit at the end of the chase.
Tuesday morning, Harborview announced that the injured officer had fully recovered and been discharged. The pedestrian remains hospitalized but is also expected to recover.
Around 3:30 a.m. Bothell police announced that the suspected shooter had been found hiding on a nearby rooftop and taken into custody.
UPDATE: Subject suspected of fatally shooting Bothell Police Officer has been taken into custody without incident. Subject was located hiding on a rooftop near the scene.

Investigators with the Snohomish County Multiple Agency Response Team, or SMART say they interviewed the suspect, a 37-year-old man, who admitted to shooting the officers. He has been booked into the King County Jail after a judge found probable cause for murder, assault and vehicular assault.
Meanwhile, several nearby police agencies have taken to Twitter to express their condolences.
