In the midst of a labor market ravaged by the COVID-19 pandemic over the past year, the insurance industry remains relatively stable and a good landing spot for seasoned professionals with the right skill sets or recent college graduates.

“Overall, the insurance industry is very stable, and it offers lots of robust, long-term opportunities, because there are so many different departments and roles,” said Jim Schwalen, senior VP of Marketing and Personal Lines. “As a regional carrier, we’re a great size; we’re not small, but can still retain a small company feel. Our size, as well as operating as a mutual company, provides great stability. We’re not owned by stock owners and know we won’t be bought out. We’ve been around 127 years. Finally, working with our independent agency partners provides a perfect opportunity for those who enjoy building relationships.”

Individuals with skill sets that include customer service, attention to detail and organization, problem solving, analytical skills, and communication should consider applying the open positions.

“We have a friendly, open, and cooperative culture. Everyone is treated like family, from the top down,” said Tammy Muckerheide, Assistant VP of Commercial Lines Underwriting. “We work hard, but we also play hard too. We’re goals driven and make sure to reward and celebrate our successes.”

West Bend prides itself on providing growth and development opportunities for all of its associates.

“It’s been fun for me to watch the people who I’ve been involved with in the recruiting process grow and move into leadership positions or be respected as a highly-technical expert in their field. I also love what we’ve done in the community through volunteer opportunities,” said Tracy Thom, Human Resources Manager.

West Bend also offers flexible work options, a competitive benefits package, and many onsite amenities, including cafeteria, fitness center, health clinic, and 160 acres of woodland and restored prairie, highlighted by trails, associate gardens, and a nine-hole disc golf course.

“West Bend has a welcoming culture. You’ll quickly learn you have teammates and mentors who care and want you to succeed,” said Kevin Rausch, Director of Marketing and Customer Service.

Most associates at West Bend continue to work virtually due to the pandemic. However, guidance from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is being closely monitored, as well as the latest updates on vaccine availability, all of which is fueling plans to welcome back associates at the right time.

“At West Bend we know our greatest asset is our associates,” said Kevin Steiner, President and CEO. “With them, we’ve created a collaborative work environment that has really become the foundation of our culture. While being together is key to collaboration, we also understand it’s important to provide our associates with flexibility in their work schedules. We’ve always worked hard, and will continue to work hard, to create a workplace that’s a destination for our associates.”
