Wisconsin Should Do Away With 'Dairyland' Slogan, Says Business Leader

The way 'forward' means parting with "America's Dairyland" moniker on Wisconsin license plates.

MADISON, WI – Kurt Bauer, the head of the Wisconsin Chamber of Commerce thinks it's time to move "forward" and drop the state's familiar "America's Dairyland" slogan from state license plates. According to WISN-TV, he told a group of business leaders Sunday that the change would reflect the diversification of the state's economy.

The change of the slogan also would go far to improve the perception of the state, Bauer said. The TV station notes that the "Dairyland" slogan has been on the license plates since 1940. Bauer's comments drew criticism from the state's Farm Bureau.

"We are known as America's Dairyland. Dairy is an important industry in our state. We are growing. We're innovative, and I think it would make sense because agriculture is so important to our economy that we recognize that on our license plates as well," Bob Richard, the farm bureau's Senior Director of Governmental Relations.
