One Dead As Helicopter Crashes Into River

Divers called off their search of the Fox River late Saturday night, after one man has been reported dead in the crash.

OSHKOSH, WI —Authorities in Winnebago County have confirmed that one man is dead following a helicopter crash into Fox River Saturday afternoon.

According to a WISN report, the helicopter crashed at about 12:30 p.m. into the Fox River in Oshkosh. Officials said that the victim appeared to be the pilot.

Officials said the helicopter snagged a power line, as it fell into the river. Local power company workers shut the power off to the live power lines to enable divers to conduct a search of the river.

According to WBAY TV, a witness said that it appeared that two people were in the helicopter taking photos from above, however police have not confirmed the eyewitness observation.

Oshkosh firefighters searched the surface of the water but initially not find anything, WBAY reported. They had to stop the search due to the high voltage power lines. One the power was cut to the downed lines, the search was resumed and both the helicopter and the pilot's body were recovered, according to the report.

The sheriff's office said they are working with the power company to reset the power lines across the river.
