Case and Horlick Wrestlers Struggle at the Southeast Conference Tournament

Rebels took sixth overall while the Eagles finished eighth.

The Southeast Conference has several dominant teams when it comes to wrestling. For anyone outside of Franklin, Muskego or Kenosha Tremper it can be very difficult to go up against kids from those schools.

That was the case for Racine Case and Racine Horlick Saturday at the SEC conference tournament as the Rebels took sixth overall while the Eagles finished eighth after a frustrating day on the mats.

“Today we didn’t do very well,” said David Edwards, head coach for Case High School. “We had seniors wrestle like freshmen, make a lot of mistakes and the freshmen wrestle like freshmen too. The young guys are wrestling good, they’re coming along nice, but the seniors have to step up when it’s time to step up.”

The Eagles had quite a difficult time piecing anything together Saturday as only two wrestlers placed in the top five.

Tyler Hunter (135) and Luke Larson (140) were the lone bright spots for the Case on somewhat of a long afternoon.

While Case struggled, Racine Horlick had a bit more success.

The Rebels placed six of their wrestlers in the top five, leaving out only one man from their depleted roster. Paul Wittrock (215) took fifth for the Rebels. Harley Klemick (112), Lightning Hernandez (135), and Taylor Strack (145) all took fourth while Charles Mulnix (130) and Andres Marquez both finished on the podium with third-place results.

While neither team finished atop the standings at the end of the day, coach Edwards said they don’t view going against such talented competition with a ‘woe is me’ type attitude but rather as an opportunity.

“I think it’s good for them,” Edwards said. “This is the best competition so they know what to strive for. It’s always good to wrestle the big guys. We don’t go in afraid of them but it’d be nice to perform better.”

Both teams will be at Racine Case this coming Saturday for Regionals.
