Drive Safe This Memorial Day, Here's Where The Problem Areas Are

As many travelers head out of town for the three-day Memorial Day weekend, there’s still plenty of construction that might add frustration to your travel plans.

So slow down and drive safely.

If you don’t, there might be a hefty fine or a car crash in your future. More than 400 law enforcement agencies throughout Wisconsin will be out in force during the holiday weekend to crackdown on unbuckled drivers and passengers as part of the "Click It or Ticket" mobilization, which runs until June 2, according to the DOT. 

Highway construction in most work zones will be suspended at noon today and won’t resume until 6 a.m. Tuesday.

"While most lanes through work zones will be open to handle the heavy holiday traffic, drivers may still encounter narrow lanes, lane shifts and rough pavement," said Don Greuel, chief of WisDOT Project Services. "They will need to stay alert, slow down, and not tailgate.

"Rear-end collisions caused primarily by distracted driving, speeding and following other vehicles too closely are the most frequent type of crash when approaching and driving through work zones. Peak travel times for the Memorial Day weekend are expected to be from noon until 8 p.m. on both Friday, May 24, and Monday, May 27."

Here are the significant road construction projects that may affect highway travel during the Memorial Day weekend include the following:

• Marquette Interchange in Milwaukee County
• I-94 North-South, Milwaukee County to Illinois state line
• I-43 in Milwaukee County
• Bayview Bridge in Door County
• I-43 Leo Frigo Bridge in Green Bay (Only one lane open southbound over the Memorial Day holiday. Both lanes northbound will be open.
• US 41 in Brown County
• I-94 in Eau Claire and Trempealeau counties
• I-94 in St. Croix County
• US 12/18 Madison Beltline
• I-39/US 51 Marathon and Portage counties
• WIS 29 in Marathon County
• US 51 in Oneida County
• WIS 73 in Wood County
