State’s Largest Police Association Names Van Wanggaard Legislator of the Year

Wanggaard ranked as the most law enforcement-friendly legislator in the State Senate.

MADISON – Last week, the Wisconsin Professional Police Association (WPPA) announced that State Sen. Van Wanggaard (R-Racine) had earned one of two “WPPA Legislators of the Year" awards.

Wanggaard received this award because of his support and authorship of legislation favored by law enforcement during the previous legislative session.

“Although I am honored to receive this distinction, I did not anticipate the recognition,” said Wanggaard in a statement released Monday. “Working to improve public safety, the community and the lives of those that serve our communities is what we are elected to do. That’s why I’m happy to see so many legislators from both parties on the WPPA honor roll.”

Wanggaard received the highest score in the State Senate on the WPPA legislative scorecard, which measures support for WPPA legislation on a non-partisan mathematical scale. The WPPA represents over 10,000 law enforcement personnel, in over 300 local affiliates.

The Report Card is a reflection of WPPA’s non-partisan, independent approach to the Legislature. The legislative Honor Roll includes 19 Republicans (7 senators and 12 assembly representatives) and 24 Democrats (4 senators and 20 assembly representatives).

The non-partisan scoring methodology also resulted in a Republican State Senator (Van Wanggaard) and a Democratic Assembly Representative (Gordon Hintz) earning the top spots for WPPA Legislators of the Year.
