Woman Enraged Over Boyfriend Sneaking Out to See Their Girlfriend

A Caledonia woman faces charges after police say she used a vacuum cleaner to damage her own vehicle because she thought her boyfriend was sneaking around to see their shared girlfriend.

A young woman is facing domestic abuse charges after police say she went into a rage and damaged her own car with a vacuum cleaner because she thought her boyfriend was sneaking off to see their shared - and estranged - girlfriend.

Caledonia police report that two young women, both 19, were living together and in a romantic relationship with each other and with a 38-year-old man who lived with them in the 1600 block of Charles Avenue. Only one of the women is employed, and she was getting annoyed that her girlfriend and boyfriend were "having fun while she was at work," so she told the other woman she had to move out.

On Thursday night, the man left home at 9 p.m. and returned at 11 p.m. only to leave again without coming back inside the apartment. The young woman told officers she suspected the man went to see her estranged girlfriend at that woman's sister's apartment in the 3300 block of Packard Avenue, so she drove over there to find out.

When she arrived at the apartment building, she said she saw a Nissan Maxima in the parking lot with fogged windows. Two people got out, she said, and one of them was her boyfriend. This made her very angry, reports read, so she grabbed a vacuum cleaner from the Dumpster and began attacking her own car, eventually smashing out a window.

A resident of the building called police, who arrived around midnight.

Police say the woman told them she became tired after hitting her car with the vacuum cleaner, so she got back in her car and pulled out of the lot, driving away slowly. But when she thought she saw her boyfriend near Maxima near the dumpster again, she pulled back around and tried to drive between his car and the Dumpster.

However, she drove into a ditch and got stuck. When she saw her boyfriend, she told him to get their truck in order to pull the car out of the ditch..

When officers questioned the boyfriend, they say he admitted to leaving home to look for his second girlfriend, but she wasn't at her sister's. When he saw his first girlfriend pull into the lot of the sister's apartment building, he left the area and parked the Maxima behind the woman's grandparents' house a few blocks away.

Police took the woman into custody for domestic disorderly conduct and domestic criminal damage to property. Officers say the woman said she didn’t think she’d get in trouble for hitting the car because it was her car. She also said she has a 5-week-old baby and that her boyfriend believes the child is his, but she isn't so sure.
