GREENDALE, WI — Looking to stay the night in a Wisconsin home that's rich with history?

The Apple Court House, an original Greendale home straight out of the Depression era, is finally available to rent after two years of restoration by the Greendale Historical Society, according to the latest issue of Greendale's Life in the Village magazine.

The home is an artifact from Greendale's founding mission: affordable housing during the Depression, Milwaukee Magazine wrote. The village was formed by President Franklin Delano Roosevelt during the New Deal out of desperation to combat the massive homelessness brought on during the Great Depression, according to the magazine.

What resulted were hundreds of simple homes in a village that first lady Eleanor Roosevelt called "delightful," according to the magazine.

They don't always come as advertised, though. Many "Originals" have seen changes since their construction in the late 1930s. When the Greendale Historical Society obtained this Original home in May 2019, it had its work cut out, according to the historical society website.

Through community support and plenty of work from the Greendale Historical Society, this home is pretty close to its actual, original state. The siding-clad home was stripped down to its original masonry, and unique details such as the original toilet paper holder, stairway railing, sink, coal chute and wood beams were kept in place, the historical society said.

Some modern amenities were added such as air conditioning, Wi-Fi, a shower and in-home laundry, Life in the Village wrote.

The restored Greendale Original home is at 5597 Apple Court. Proceeds from rentals will benefit the upkeep and other expenses of the house, the historical society said.
