UPDATE: Police Believe Accidental Explosion Caused Injuries to Hudson Golf Course Employee

Investigators believe an employee at Hudson Golf Course was using a torch to open the top of a sealed, 55-gallon drum that had a small amount of oil in it, causing an accidental explosion.

Hudson Police believe an accidental explosion in a maintenance shop at Hudson Golf Course caused the severe head injuries that sent a 35-year-old man to the hospital Friday afternoon.

Investigators believe Chad Wang, 35, of Spring Valley, Minn., was using a acetylene torch to open the top of a 55-gallon drum that was sealed, Hudson Police Chief Marty Jensen said.

There was a small amount of oil inside the drum, Jensen said, and it appears that Wang used a torch to open the top of the drum, which caused an accidental explosion.

The explosion caused the top of the drum to be shot off, and hit Wang in the head causing severe head trauma, Jensen said. It is unclear how long Wang was laying on the floor before being found by the UPS driver at about 12:15 p.m., but it appears he could have been there for a few hours.

Wang was working alone in one of the maintenance buildings at Hudson Golf Course.

Hudson Police were called to a report of a man down inside one of the maintenance buildings at the Hudson Golf Club Friday afternoon.

A UPS driver at about 12:15 p.m. called in the report of a man lying in a pool of blood inside one of the buildings, Hudson Police Chief Marty Jensen said.

When first responders arrived, they found a 35-year-old employee of the golf course semi-conscious, lying on the floor and suffering from a severe head injury. He was transported to Regions Hospital for treatment.

"At first it was unclear if it was an assault or an accident," Jensen said. "But I just left the scene and investigators are really, really confident it was an accident."

Detectives are continuing to process the scene and interviewing potential witnesses, Jensen said. The public is not in any danger.
