Meet an “Amazing” Volunteer Who Loves To Read To Kindergartners

It takes a true snow emergency to keep him away.

Fred Leidel, 101, bicycles twice a week to Schenk Elementary School in Madison, Wisconsin to read to an eager classroom of kindergartners. He reads to them one by one at a desk especially set out in the hall. The kids love their time with “Grandpa Fred." They look forward to this special treat. Fred’s dedication to the children is such that it takes a true snow emergency to keep him away.

No big surprise, really, since this is a man who went skydiving at 94, and logged some 33,000 miles as a runner between the ages of 50 and 80! For Fred, volunteering is one way to stay active, and staying active, in his book, is very important.
