Firefighters Raise $6K for Muscular Dystrophy

Firefighters raised almost $2,000 more than last year's effort. All the proceeds benefit research to combat muscular dystrophy.

If current trends continue, Menomonee Fall firefighters are going to need some bigger boots.

Every year the department hits the streets and solicits donations from passers-by to raise money to combat muscular dystrophy. This year, the MFFD raised $6,432, which was $1,874 more than they raised last year on Labor Day.

"I really wanted to thank all the volunteers that helped fill the boot on Labor Day," wrote Falls firefighter Stephen Schmitz in an email to Patch. "I also wanted to thank the citizens from Menomonee Falls and those passing through for all of their generous donations."

All donations benefit local Muscular Dystrophy Association clients, helping to send children and young adults to MDA Summer Camp in Camp Lake, purchase and repair wheelchairs, and facilitate support groups and clinic visits at Children’s Hospital and Community Memorial Hospital.

"A young man named Ryan stopped by to thank us for our fund raising efforts. He told me he had muscular dystrophy and was now in remission due to the treatment he was receiving," Schmitz said. "That was so motivating to hear that as a community we are helping people fight their battle with muscular dystrophy."
