J.P. Tokoto Finding His Stride as a Tar Heel

Menomonee Falls graduate, J.P. Tokoto, has appeared in 18 games this season for the North Carolina Tar Heels in his freshman year.

Former Menomonee Falls High School basketball star J.P. Tokoto is making an impact on the court with Roy Williams and the University of North Carolina Tar Heels.

Tokoto, a freshman, has played in all 18 games of the Tar Heels’ season and he’s averaging 11 minutes per game. Tokoto has scored 71 total points and 49 rebounds in those 18 appearances.

Tokoto holds virtually every individual basketball record at MFHS. He’s the school’s all-time leading scorer and set the school’s single game scoring record in February 2012 by notching 48 points. For Falls fans, it often wasn’t the total points scored, but the way he scored them. Tokoto seemed to score more points above the rim, and definitely energized the MFHS crowd. Tokoto played in celebrity-sponsored all-star games and won the American Family Insurance dunk contest last spring.

Tokoto was a highly touted recruit for much of his high school career. Roy Williams became quite familiar with the MFHS gymnasium over that time. He signed with UNC in a highly public event in March 2011 at Dave and Buster’s in Wauwatosa. Some sports writers claimed Tokoto could be UNC’s next Vince Carter.

In fall, Tokoto participated in UNC’s “Late Night with Roy” event and showed off some of his talents on the court. After the game, Tokoto switched the basketball shorts - for a tutu.
