Sarah Godlewski, Tom Nelson Take on Ron Johnson

The two Democrats vying for Johnson's U.S. Senate seat appeared at Menomonee Falls Action Team's monthly meeting.

Menomonee Falls, WI -- Menomonee Falls Action Team hosted State Treasurer Sarah Godlewski and Outagamie County Executive Tom Nelson at its monthly meeting on Tuesday, April 20. Both Democratic candidates have announced campaigns for the U.S. Senate seat presently held by Senator Ron Johnson, a Republican.

In 2018, Godlewski led the fight to keep the state treasurer’s office after Republicans sought to eliminate it. Voters overwhelmingly chose to retain the position. She then ran for the job and won a four-year term.

When asked by attendee Dr. Kesavan Kutty about her strategy to win in conservative parts of the state such as northern Wisconsin, Godlewski went right for Senator Johnson.

“I believe our #1 priority in this campaign is fighting for Wisconsin farmers and rural Wisconsin. The fact [is] that we were number one in farm bankruptcies because of the trade war that Ron Johnson helped lead.”

Tom Nelson serves northeastern Wisconsin and previously served three terms in the State Assembly. He was the first Democrat to announce a campaign for the 2022 election.

In February, a poll conducted by Change Research favored Nelson over Johnson by four points.

“I’ve been in this race for four months and Ron Johnson has been a U.S. senator for ten years. And I’m beating him by four points. I mean, that’s got to be worse than having a billboard outside the exit to your house”, referring to a Nelson campaign billboard calling for Johnson’s resignation.

Menomonee Falls Action Team is a grassroots group of volunteers, activists, and voters working to protect democracy, advance progressive values and policies, and hold elected officials accountable. It plans to provide equal time to all candidates and has invited Alex Lasry and Senator Johnson to its meeting in May.
