Simone Lee Helps U.S. Volleyball Earn Silver in Thailand

Lee scores 55 points during the tournament, which was the best finish by the national team.

Menomonee Falls volleyball standout Simone Lee was part of a historic run for the U.S. Girls Youth Volleyball team Sunday in Thailand.

The girls ran into a powerhouse team from China and lost in straight sets (25-16, 25-21, 25-23) in just 68 minutes, according to FIVB online. China went on to win its fourth gold medal in just over a decade at the World Championships. The U.S.'s  silver medal was its  best  performance so far  in the eight times they have participated in the competition.

Lee notched 43 spikes, 11 blocks and 1 serve point to score a total of 55 points during the tournament.

Lee also plays club volleyball with Club Fusion in Marengo, IL. Last year, Lee played an instrumental role on the national team, and helped lead the squad to a 2012 Continental Championship crown in Mexico. Last year’s victory sealed a spot for the United States at the upcoming World Championship.

Lee, a 6-foot, 1-inch outside hitter, has verbally committed to play volleyball at Penn State University after graduating in 2014. The MFHS girls volleyball season opens at 7 p.m. Aug. 28 at Menomonee Falls.
