Mount Pleasant police have identified the 3-year-old boy who died Friday under suspicious circumstances as Hunter J. Wise. He celebrated his third birthday on this past Dec. 18.

Marcus A. Johnson, the boyfriend of the boy's mother, was arrested at 5:15 p.m. Friday and is in custody at the Racine County Jail, the department said.

Johnson is facing possible first-degree intentional homicide charges in connection with Wise's death, Mount Pleasant police said.

"We expect the district attorney to review the case early next week," Chief Tim Zarzecki told Patch Friday night. "This remains an on-going investigation and we are looking diligently at every aspect of it."

While he didn't confirm directly if the boy's mother was being questioned, Zarzecki did say investigators are talking with everyone who might be connected with any of the parties involved.

Police and South Shore Fire Department rescue squads were dispatched at 10:10 a.m. Friday to a home in the 1500 block of Bryn Mawr Avenue in the Lake Park neighborhood for reports of an "unresponsive" 3-year-old boy, police said.

Wise was pronounced dead after being transported to Wheaton Franciscan St. Mary's Hospital. The cause of death is unknown, pending an autopsy. Police are not identifying the child until his family is notified.

"All we can say for sure is that the child's death was not from natural causes," Zarzecki confirmed. "Racine County Medical Examiner Mike Payne confirmed that this morning, too."

in the home until a slew of police cars blocked the street in front of the home.

"I never saw anybody come or go from there," she said. "There was one ambulance, a fire truck and 10 cop cars."

Brau also said three small children, aged 5 and under, were taken from the home by protective services.

Crews from SSFD have already been debriefed, which Zarzecki explained serves a double purpose; collecting information and allowing firefighters to talk about the experience. This is a regular step following an involved call for service, he added.

"The worst thing you can do is not talk about it, especially with this kind of traumatic death," Zarzecki said. "We expect to have someone come in for our officers next week."
