DOT Holiday Travel: It is Still Construction Season

As if holiday travel weren't already stressful, drivers on Wisconsin roadways also have several constructions zones they have to go through.

The Wisconsin Department of Transportation (WisDOT) Southeast Region is reminding motorists to expect congestion and stay alert in work zones. Hunters and holiday travelers are advised of the following work zones that will be in effect through the end of November:

KENOSHA COUNTY

• The two right lanes are closed I-94 WEST (NB) from County C to WIS 158. The left lane is closed I-94 EAST (SB) between WIS 158 and WIS 50.

MILWAUKEE COUNTY

• The Mitchell Interchange (I-43/894 eastbound to I-43/94 northbound) system ramp is closed.
• There are also access restrictions from the Airport Spur and College Ave to I-43/94 northbound, and from I-43/94 southbound to the Airport Spur.
• US 18 (Bluemound Road) from 124^th Street to Mayfair Road, city of Wauwatosa. Traffic in both directions will remain on the outside lanes until approximately Thanksgiving.

OZAUKEE COUNTY

• WIS 33 from Milwaukee River Overflow Bridge (Saukville) to South Tower Drive (Port Washington). Lane restrictions in effect.

  WASHINGTON COUNTY

• WIS 144 from Skyline Drive to Valley View Road.  County HH intersection at WIS 144 is closed.

  WAUKESHA COUNTY

• US 18 (Bluemound Road) from Moorland Road to 124^th Street. Two lanes of traffic in each direction will be maintained Right in/right outs will be maintained for the duration of the project, except as required to facilitate construction.
• WIS 83 Mukwonago to Genesee from County NN to WIS 59. Scheduled to re-open Nov. 23, weather permitting.
• I-94 East - West Freeway/ County P Interchange. I-94, all ramps, County P and County DR traffic will be open and back in their respective lanes by November 23, 2011.  Short term lane closures and flagging operations on County P and County DR will continue until mid December.

Tips for Wisconsin drivers:

• Know where construction zones are located and allow extra time to get through them.
• Avoid the peak travel hours. 
• Watch for special messages on electronic message boards as you approach major construction zones. 
• Slow down, get into the correct lane early, and merge cautiously. 
• Stay alert for surprise slow-downs. 
• Take a scenic alternate route.
