Get Out and Play!

It's easy to fall into the rut of only going to the places nearby, places we can walk to, or the ones we always visit. Help me find outdoor gems to share with my 3-year-old son.

Today’s sunny weather has me finally believing that the season really is changing. It’s been incredibly fun as a parent to watch my son’s physical skills catch up with his desire to run, jump and climb.

At 3 years old, my little guy is energetic and active as can be – and I’m thrilled about it. While some days I may wish that he’d just calm down, it doesn’t last. His love of the outdoors gets me out of the house, too.

It’s easy to fall into the rut of only going to the places nearby, the places we can walk to, or the places we always visit. I’m hoping to explore the area’s parks and playgrounds with him this year, looking for more places for him to run, kick a ball, swing and jump.

Last summer, we were often at the Racine Zoo, or at the Kids’ Cove playground at North Beach, or one of the playgrounds within walking distance of our house. But I’d like to get out a little more, maybe explore some place with a pond, and ducks we could feed. Or somewhere with a short nature trail, where we could watch for birds and new wildflower blooms. Or anywhere with a good playground.

Where are your favorite places to explore the outdoors?
