RACINE COUNTY, WI — Growing facial hair is against department policy at the Racine County Sheriff's office. But instead of seeing the policy as onerous, deputies and staff saw it as a chance to help others.

During Nov. and Dec. 2019, numerous members of the Racine County Sheriff’s Office Staff participated in an effort to raise money for the Women’s Resource Center in Racine. For a $50 donation, Deputies and Corrections Officers were authorized to grow facial hair which is normally prohibited.

Several other members of the agency also donated to this effort in varying amounts. By the time the fundraising effort was done, the office $3,000.

Racine County Sheriff Christopher Schmaling along with members of his staff were able to deliver “New Journey Baskets” to the Women's Resource Center in Racine. Each basket holds household essentials such as pots and pans, dishes and utensils, bathroom essentials and towels.

Authorities say the funds raised was enough to make nine new baskets. There was enough money left over to buy a 40-inch smart TV, and Blu-Ray player for the center, as well as a $250 donation to Women’s Resource Center itself.
