Illinois Man Charged With Possession Of Heroin In Racine

A K9 dog sniffed the heroin in the suspect's gas tank door, where a 26.5 gram ball of heroin was found, police said.

RACINE, WI —A 25-year-old man from Waukegan, Illinois, was arrested Friday on charges of possession of heroin with intent to deliver at the Seeker Motel after members of the Special Investigations Unit assisted with two buy-bust operations in Racine, police said.

Officers responded to the motel in the 1700 block of Durand Avenue after receiving a tip that the suspect, Jerald D. Hodges, was delivering heroin to the room, the report said. After clearing and securing the room, they waited for Hodges to arrive.

Once Hodges arrived, police identified themselves, searched his person, and found nothing, according to the report. Hodges insisted he did nothing wrong and he was "just a middle man," the report said Officers called in a K9 unit, and the dog detected something in Hodges' running car outside the motel, police said.

During a search, officers opened up the gas tank filling door and found a golf ball-sized chunk of what appeared to be heroin in a plastic bag, according to the report. Officers tested the substance and it was positive for the presence of heroin and weighed 26.5 grams pre- and post-test, the report said.

The charge is punishable by up to 25 years in prison. According to police reports, Hodges has no previous criminal charges in the state of Wisconsin.
