Jealousy Fuels Domestic Violence Incident, Police Say

A Mount Pleasant man is accused of punching the mother of his child in the face after she told him she didn't want to see him any longer.

The man, 51, was charged Monday in Racine County Circuit Court with a single count of felony substantial battery, domestic abuse assessments, repeater. If convicted, he faces 3-1/2 years in prison and/or up to $10,000 in fines. Because he's considered a repeat offender, the judge has the option of tacking more time onto any sentence that might get imposed. 

Patch is not using the man's name to protect the name of the victim in this case.

According to the criminal complaint, Racine police responded at 12:45 a.m. Monday to a residence in the 2000 block of Racine Street. When officers arrived, they found a woman bleeding from her mouth and missing front teeth. She told them that the defendant accused her of seeing another man after the woman told the defendant she no longer wanted a relationship with him.

Police say the woman told them the defendant slapped her and then punched her in the nose and mouth multiple times. When she collapsed to the floor, the man left and the woman called police.

A family friend came over to take the woman's two children into their care while she was transported to the hospital for treatment and to record her injuries. Police reports indicate the woman may have suffered a broken nose and jaw in addition to her missing teeth.

The defendant during his initial appearance was given a $750 cash bond and ordered to stay away from the woman. His preliminary hearing is scheduled for March 13.
