Linden Ave. Angels Fundraiser Doubles as Fire Safety Education, Too

After a fire destroyed the Scott family home Nov. 8 and took the lives of three children, the metro Racine community sprang into action.

The help continues with a fundraiser from 4 to 10 p.m. on Dec. 14 at Festival Hall featuring a spaghetti dinner; raffle; music; and visits, of course, from Santa and Mrs. Claus. Part of the evening will include a fire education program and the distribution of smoke alarms to families who need them.

Dayja Scott, 9; Daliya Scott, 8, died at the scene. Their brothers Michael Scott, 7, and Luther Scott, 5, were transported to Children’s Hospital in Milwaukee. Michael Scott passed away Nov. 9, but Luther Scott remains at Children’s recovering. Their mother, Deborah Scott, is staying with family when she is not at the hospital with her remaining son.

An area funeral home and church donated services for the three older Scott children. According to a story in The Journal Times, more than 250 people attended the funerals Friday.

The community continues to rally around the Scotts, and now Racine fire fighters and the Professional Fire Fighters of Wisconsin are teaming up with We Are Racine and Girls, Inc. to raise money for Luther Scott's care and promote fire safety and education.

Beth David, founder of Racine Uncovered and the force behind We Are Racine, is happy to work with the fire fighters to continue providing help to the Scott family.

"Every firefighter on duty that night was on Linden Avenue. They saw, experienced and fought like hell first hand for that family," she said. "Racine fire fighters want to give back to the family and the community and we are proud and honored to be asked to partner with them."
