Man Allegedly Tries to Stop Car Repossession, Gets Pepper Sprayed

Nakia Hayes was cited for disorderly conduct after he tried to stop the repossession of his vehicle.

When you allegedly miss two years of payments, shouldn't you kind of expect your vehicle to get repossessed?

Nakia Hayes, 37, was cited Friday for disorderly conduct after he allegedly tried to prevent the repossession of his vehicle.

According to the Mount Pleasant Police Department, the repossession company called officers to the 6000 block of Washington Avenue Friday morning to help keep order while company personnel took Hayes' vehicle.

Police reports indicate the driver of the tow truck got the vehicle hooked up before Hayes tried to interfere by jumping on the driver's back. The driver disengaged Hayes by using pepper spray, but that was not enough to deter Hayes from trying to stop the truck from leaving with his vehicle.

After he was sprayed, Hayes supposedly jumped behind the wheel of his vehicle, but when officers arrived and ordered him out, he complied.

This was not the first attempt to repossess Hayes' car, the police report reads. The repossession driver told officers they've visited Hayes' residence several times, but the car was in the garage. This time, though, they went to Hayes' business.

When officers read through the repossession order, they reportedly asked Hayes if he was behind in his payments.

"I guess I was," he allegedly replied.

Police say Hayes had missed two years of payments on the vehicle.

Hayes was cited for disorderly conduct. The tow truck driver was not cited for using the pepper spray, which is legal to carry, because officers agreed he was defending himself.
