Mount Pleasant Police Seeking Hit/Run Suspect

Mount Pleasant Police are asking the community for help finding the driver involved in a hit-and-run Wednesday afternoon.

Sgt. Eric Relich of MPPD said that at 2:50 p.m. Wednesday, officers responded to a report of a hit-and-run at the intersection of Highway 20 and Oakes Road.

A witness in a semi-truck told police that a female, approximately 15 years old, crossed Washington Avenue going north toward Dairy Queen when she was struck by a red, Pontiac Grand Am traveling westbound in the right lane.

The male driver did not stop and officers are looking for him.

"According to what we were told, the girl was hit, but she wasn't crossing at the light in the crosswalk," Relich said. "The driver of the car had the right-of-way so he might not have been at fault, but because he fled the scene, now this is a hit-and-run."

Officers said the victim is a student at Case High School and reported that some of her clothing appears to have ripped from being struck by the car. Police recovered those scraps along with other evidence at the scene that might have come from the suspect vehicle.

The victim was cited for pedestrian darting into traffic. She was also transported to Wheaton Franciscan All Saint's for non-life threatening injuries.

"That's a dangerous area and pedestrians should use the controlled intersection and the crosswalk to get across the road safely," Relich added.
