Mount Pleasant to Form Committee to Shop for Insurance

Trustees agree that putting together a mixed committee of staff and elected officials to shop for the best insurance plans at the lowest prices helps employees and residents.

Knowing health insurance woes aren’t going anywhere, the Mount Pleasant officials want to take a closer look at the issue for the future.

Trustees Friday unanimously approved staying with an option in the state insurance plan instead of going with a cheaper option from a private insurer. At that meeting, South Shore union President William Miller suggested that trustees put together an advisory committee made up of village employees and board members to more fully explore insurance options.

"We need a committee to really shop around because we need to be responsible to the community and the employees," he said. "We realize there is potential for savings besides this one plan sitting in front of us today."

Trustee Gary Feest said he supports moving forward with a committe.

"I agree absolutely with putting together the committee to research insurance," he said. "I really do not like how this private plan was cobbled together by ex-officials without any input from other trustees or staff members fully vetting it out."

Miller said the committee is a good first step toward reform.

"Reform is necessary, but we have to do it responsibly," he added. "Everyone on both sides believes this is the right thing to do."
