Update: Investigators Have Tentative Name of Pedestrian Struck by Train

**Updated 4:20 p.m.

Mount Pleasant police say they have tentatively identified the person struck and killed by a train Wednesday.

"We are continuing to work with the Racine County Medical Examiner’s Office to positively confirm the victim’s name," said MPPD Sgt. Eric Relich. "More information will be released when confirmation is made."

Earlier Thursday, police confirmed that the man who was hit and killed by a train Wednesday likely stepped on the tracks to commit suicide.

Mount Pleasant police Sgt. Shawn Lueke confirmed with Patch Thursday that Racine County Medical Examiner Michael Payne was ruling the man's death a suicide.

"We are working on identifying the victim and hope to release that information this afternoon," she said. "The medical examiner did rule the incident a suicide."

In a press release issued Thursday afternoon, though, Relich says the cause of the accident remains under investigation.

"The circumstances surrounding the incident remain under investigation," he wrote.

Mount Pleasant police and South Shore rescue teams were called to the tracks off of Old Spring Street around 11:45 a.m. Wednesday for a report of a pedestrian vs. train accident

Impact occurred about 100 feet south of Old Spring Street on the Union Pacific tracks between Stuart and Airline roads. Old Spring was closed for several hours as police and rescue worked to clear the scene.

The victim was a white male, possibly of middle age, and he was pronounced dead at the scene by the ME.
