Mount Pleasant police say a Racine man who was out on bond for domestic violence and ordered to stay away from his alleged victim is back in jail after a traffic stop during which he was with the victim.
Jayla Williams, 20, was charged Wednesday in Racine County Circuit Court with one count of felony bail jumping. If convicted, he faces up to six years and/or up to $10,000 in fines.
According to the criminal complaint, Mount Pleasant police at 12:20 a.m. Wednesday initiated a traffic stop because the license plate of a vehicle didn't match the car to which it was attached. Officers followed the car into the parking lot of the condo development at 1400 block of Westridge and made contact with the driver, later identified as Williams.
There were other occupants in the car as well, and they were all identified. But, as police were conducting the traffic stop, officers say dispatch told them an anonymous caller identified a woman in the car as the victim in a domestic violence case involving Williams. A condition of his bond for a felony count of strangulation and suffocation and misdemeanor counts of battery and disorderly conduct included not having any contact with the woman.
When police questioned the woman initially, she gave them a fake name. After officers received the information from dispatch about her identity, they asked the woman again for her name, which she admitted, the complaint reads. The woman reportedly told police she lied about her name because she knew she shouldn't be with Williams.
The defendant remains in the Racine County Jail as of Wednesday afternoon on a $2,500 cash bond. His preliminary hearing is Sept. 19.
