Mount Pleasant police say the registered owner of a car that was involved in a hit-and-run early Friday morning turned himself in late Friday evening.

According to MPPD Sgt. Eric Relich, Matthieu Taylor, 29, of Racine, turned himself in "late in the evening" Friday. He was cited for inattentive driving and hit-and-run causing property damage.

A press release from Relich Friday said that officers at 3:09 a.m. Friday were called to the corner of Taylor Avenue and Meachem Road for a report of a white Dodge Charger that hit a traffic signal, knocking it over in the northbound lanes.

When police arrived, the car was no longer on scene, but a trail of automotive fluids and debris led them to a parking lot just east of the intersection where the vehicle was parked but unoccupied. Relich noted there was significant front-end damage and the airbags deployed.

Officers searched the surrounding neighborhoods for a suspect, but were unable to locate anyone. It was unclear how many people were in the car, but police are assuming there were no serious injuries as a result of the accident.

"At this time alcohol and/or drugs are believed to have been a factor in this crash," Relich wrote in the statement. "Officers will be issuing charges to the registered owner who is being sought out for questioning."
