RACINE, WI — Officials at Ascension All Saints Hospital say they are growing more concerned with the increase in COVID-19 positive cases they’re seeing in the greater Racine area. While other parts of the state are seeing a flattening or even decline in cases, Racine numbers continue to rise, officials say.

According to Racine health officials, the city has reported 494 COVID-19 cases. Among those cases are 60 recoveries and five virus-related fatalities as of Monday.

According to data presented in the New York Times, the Racine metro area — defined at the city of Racine combined with communities within Racine County — has the eighth-fastest case growth rate in the United States, and its case counts are doubling every 10.2 days as of Monday.

“Please stay home as much as possible, use social distancing when going out for essentials, and remember to wear a mask over your nose and mouth while in public and to wash your hands. Please remember, these rules protect you and your loved ones, and also protect the stocker at the grocery store, the clerk at the hardware store, the cook at our favorite restaurant, and all the other essential workers who have to go to their job sites every day,” Racine mayor Cory Mason said Tuesday.

According to the most recent data from the City of Racine Public Health Department, more than 41 percent of confirmed coronavirus cases in that jurisdiction are those of Hispanic or Latino ethnicity, and another 42 percent of confirmed cases report their race as black or African American. The Health Department’s jurisdiction includes the City of Racine, Elmwood Park, and Wind Point.

“There’s no doubt that COVID-19 will impact our communities for some time to come. While we are making strides in important areas such as testing, residents must continue taking all necessary precautions and keep distance from others to limit the spread of COVID-19 and protect themselves, their families and their fellow community members,” Racine County Executive, Jonathan Delagrave said in a statement.
