Racine Sheriff Reports Uptick in Car Thefts,Break-Ins

"We are partnering with surrounding agencies to aggressively pursue these investigations," according to a spokesman for the Sheriff's Office

MOUNT PLEASANT,WI— The Racine County Sheriff’s Office, as well as numerous other law enforcement agencies throughout southeastern Wisconsin, have seen an increased occurrence of vehicle thefts and thefts of valuables from unlocked vehicles.

"We are partnering with surrounding agencies to aggressively pursue these investigations," according to a spokesman for the Sheriff's Office.

On the night of October 8 into the morning hours of October 9, there were more than a dozen vehicles entered and one stolen from Union Grove. The area targeted was Bluebird Lane east to 67th Drive.

“Please consider doing a #9PMRoutine which entails locking all vehicles and doors, turning on exterior lights and security systems, and removing valuables from your vehicle and yard. It is also important to report all suspicious activity in your neighborhood to law enforcement immediately,” Sheriff Schmaling said.

This week Whitefish Bay police also warned drivers against a common winter habit: warming up cars unattended.

The Police Department reports officers are seeing a number of cars unattended and running in driveways, but they warn drivers against leaving your keys in an unattended, unlocked, and running vehicle.

"Thieves can walk up to your car, get in, and drive off in a matter of five seconds," according to police.
