Racine Zoo In 'Dire Need' Of Help; Here's How To Give

RACINE, WI — The coronavirus public health emergency has made an enormous impact on the Racine Zoo, and the organization is asking for the public's help.

Giving Tuesday will be held Tuesday, May 5 and the Zoo is hoping to raise $10,000. Every donated dollar up to $5,000 will be matched by the RUUD Family Foundation, officials said.

“The Racine Zoo has been a staple in this community for 97 years strong and if it is one thing I have heard since being here, it is all the wonderful memories people share with me from their time at the Zoo. The Zoo has always been here for you and now we ask you to help us get through this uncertain and scary time. We cannot wait to welcome you all back to the Zoo so we can all make more memories!” said Executive Director of Racine Zoo, Beth Heidorn.

People can donate online here. People can also mail a donation check to the Racine Zoo at 200 Goold Street, Racine, WI 53402. All donations are tax deductible in accordance with the IRS Tax Code.

According to Zoo officials, the coronavirus public health emergency has left the Zoo in a difficult position, and zoo staff are concerned that these budget shortfalls will create a dire situation for the Zoo's staff and animals in the near future.

Since no guests are allowed to visit campus, events and programs have been postponed resulting in a huge loss of revenue, officials said.

"The Zoo cannot simply stop functioning," officials said. Even though the Zoo is shut down for human visitors, Zoo staff is still working to care for its population of 300 animals.
