Robberies Increasing Amid Property Exchanges
Robberies are happening amid property exchanges initiated through Facebook Marketplace and other sites.
RACINE, WI—With the holidays approaching the Racine Police Department has seen an increase in robberies during property exchanges related to online transactions, according to Sgt. Chad Melby.
"In today’s world, online transactions such as Facebook Marketplace among many others that result in a face to face exchanges have become commonplace. When meeting with the seller or buyer the Racine Police Department would encourage you to meet in a heavily populated area," said Sgt. Chad Melby.

The Racine Police Department also wants the public to be aware of a common tactic where the suspect or suspects claim to be an employee of the water department or similar organization. Suspects use a story that they need access to your house to read a meter and once inside may distract the homeowner while another suspect looks for valuables.
Frequently suspects may be wearing a vague ID badge along with a vest.
If the Racine Water Department would need to personally check a meter it will be during normal business hours during the week. Also, Water Department Employees drive a blue truck with proper markings for the water department.
Citizens are encouraged to call Meter Supervisor Mike Wurster at 262-636-9186 or the general number at 262-636-9181 for employee verification.
