RUSD Fall Sports Moved To Spring Under New Schedule

On Friday, the WIAA board approved a 7-week alternate fall season that will run from February through May.

RACINE, WI — Fall sports at all Racine Unified School District schools will be moving to spring under a new alternate schedule that was approved by the WIAA last week.

"As we continue to prepare for a very unique start to the 2020-21 school year, we are faced with many difficult decisions. This morning, we want to share with you that based on the latest information and recommendations from our local health departments and in making every effort to ensure the safety and well-being of our students, coaches, staff and families, RUSD will be moving all fall sports to spring," RUSD officials said in a letter to parents on Tuesday morning.

On Friday, the WIAA board approved a 7-week alternate fall season that will run from February through May. Under the alternate season, girls swimming and volleyball would start in February. Football, girls tennis, cross country and boys soccer would all start in March.

Other school districts that choose to go forward with the normal schedule saw, "low-risk" sports start Aug. 17, and "high-risk" sports slated to begin on Sept. 7.

Low-Risk Sports:

Cross Country
Tennis
Golf
Swimming

High-Risk Sports:

Football
Volleyball
Soccer

According to the athletic association, winter sports will be three weeks shorter. Spring sports would be about two weeks shorter. Now, winter sports will start between Nov. 16-23, and wrap up by the end of February. Spring sports will start April 5-12 and wrap up by the end of June.

"We realize there might be an overlap with some sports. We will work with student-athletes and coaches to provide the best options for participation and address other questions as they arise," district officials wrote.
