Dangers of Caffeine

Drinking caffeine often can be very bad for your health.

84% of people surveyed said that they thought caffeine was bad for their health, but they drank it anyway. But what they don’t know is that not only is caffeine unhealthy, but it is also doing the opposite of what they want it to.

Many survey respondents wrote that the reason they drank caffeine was because it gave them energy. However, even if drinking caffeine is making you feel more awake, it is blocking adenosine from doing its jobs because caffeine tells your brain that it is the adenosine. The job of adenosine is to help regulate your bodily functions and make sure they are working hard.

Caffeine is also a powerful stimulant. A stimulant is a substance that raises levels of psychological or nervous activity in the body. So, even though you may feel more awake, your nervous activity level has been raised which makes your mind race and make you have a hard time thinking.

25% of surveyed people said that they consumed caffeine at least 2-3 times a week, but only 2% responded that they never drank caffeine. Continuously drinking caffeine can lead to a vicious cycle. When you drink caffeine it stays in your body for 12 hours, so you will have a harder falling asleep at night, therefore it will be harder for you to get up in the morning. Because it is so hard to get up in the morning, most people then drink some sort of caffeinated beverage to wake up, and the cycle continues. In addition, consuming caffeine regularly causes you to lose REM sleep, which is a deep sleep that is good for your body.
