Heavy Rains Give Boost to Big Muskego Lake

After last summer's drought the left the lake in rough shape, steady rains have provided a major change of pace.

The rains that have soaked Wisconsin over the past few months have certainly caused a fair amount of headaches.

But it's provided benefits in other areas—one of those places being Big Muskego Lake.

The lake was badgered by a severe drought last summer—and a mild winter and spring before that—that left it in its worst condition in years

But this year is a whole different story. The rain has meant a consistent high level of water and no problems for boaters getting around the lake, Greg Burmeister, deputy commissioner of the Big Muskego Lake/Bass Bay Protection and Rehabilitation District, told the Muskego Common Council Tuesday night.

"The lake is in exceptionally good shape this year," he said.

Some of the biggest headaches last year were weeds, which were so high that some areas of the lake were impassable.

This summer? The weeds, while growing, are nowhere near the problem they were in the past, Burmeister said.

The lake's prime conditions have not gone unnoticed. Big Muskego Lake has seen a high number of people out fishing or otherwise enjoying the lake, Burmeister said.

"This is the summer to enjoy boating," Burmeister said.
