Preserving Family History for National Grandparents Day

Capturing precious memories, family recipes and legends from grandparents can be easy and fun.

Grandparents frequently are the keepers of precious family memories, recipes and legends. With National Grandparents Day on Sept. 9, why not celebrate by visiting a grandparent and capturing some life history and wisdom for future generations?

Port resident Dick Liersch helps families capture their history on camera with though his company, My Living Legacy.

"It seems like only yesterday that I was a little kid listening to the family tell stories of those people before them," Liersch writes on the website. "I remember wanting to hear more but time got away and I grew up, and those stories melted into shady outlines of someone reminiscing. I wanted to rekindle those memories - but those I loved so much were gone, and their stories with them. Only a few relatives remained, and I was determined not to let those family legacies disappear forever.

"To this day I am so happy that I took the time to put my father in front of my now ancient video camera and tape his life story."

Liersch offers a computer program that helps individuals put together their families stories, and a preview can be found on his website.
