Elm Grove, Wis. – A new year typically dawns with plenty of newly-engaged couples, following the prime-time proposal season of Christmas and, short days later, New Year’s Eve.

• Colors: What will be the predominant color(s) of the dresses, table linens, invitations and other elements? Bringing photos, fabric swatches or paint chips to your florist is immensely helpful.
• Dresses: What is their style? Length? Material? All factor into the perfect floral complement.
• Venue: Is the wedding venue elegant, contemporary, or are you having an increasingly-popular “barn wedding?” Your flowers should fit in with their surroundings. Again, photos are worth a thousand words.

Budget is a reality in planning wedding flowers, Deaver said. The “perfect” bouquet found on Pinterest might use flowers that are out of season – they’re available, but you’ll pay for them. A florist should be willing to work with a budget you set, Deaver said, and offer creative alternatives to stay within your numbers.

“Talk with your florist as soon as you decide on your wedding dress, bridesmaids’ dresses and venue,” she said. “Their knowledge and experience might yield ideas that fill in other pieces of the larger picture.”
