MILWAUKEE — When it comes to the average change in home values from 2004-present, the Janesville area has seen smoking-hot increases. Unlucky residents in urban Milwaukee and Racine areas have seen their values plummet.

But what about if your're living in the Metro Milwaukee area in the North Shore, South Shore, or out in Brookfield or Wauwatosa?

Those are the questions The Washington Post set out to answer, not just for the country overall but for individual towns and neighborhoods, a total 19,000 U.S. zip codes.

The results: One of the more impressive and useful interactive maps you'll ever use.

Post staffers Ted Mellnik, Darla Cameron, Denise Lu,Emily Badger and Kat Downs used data from Black Knight Financial Services to compare home prices from 2004, just as real estate prices started to skyrocket, to 2015.

If you're a homeowner from Shorewood or Whitefish Bay, you've probably seen your home value increase. Up 12 percent. Home values in Brookfield and Wauwatosa have gone up in double digits, but their neighbors to the south in Greenfield, Greendale and West Allis have not been so lucky.
