Chicago Cubs Draft Former Wauwatosa West Player

Player has a chance to play with one of the current teams, organizations in MLB.

WAUWATOSA -- The Chicago Cubs took UW-Whitewater’s Austin Jones (Wauwatosa West) in the 26th round. The right-hander was 0-1 with a 4.97 ERA in 10 appearances as a junior.

As a prep pitcher at Wauwatosa West High School, Jones earned Milwaukee-area honors as a double threat: a standout pitcher and batter.

What made Austin Jones’ record-setting senior year with the Trojans in 2013 even more impressive is he accomplished the feats while his father continued a battle with brain cancer, the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports.

Though Wauwatosa West fell short of reaching state in the WIAA Summer Baseball Tournament that year, Jones led the Trojans to what is believed to be its best record in school history — 23-6.

Over 80 innings, Jones racked up 131 strikeouts, a 0.70 earned run average and nine wins. He also finished with a a .451 batting average and 28 runs batted, the newspaper says.
