Guys, Get Your “Pre-Game” Going for Valentine’s Day!

Calendar quirk creates opportunity to score romantic points early in Valentine's week!

Elm Grove, Wis. – The vagaries of 2020’s February calendar – four full weeks, and the 29th thrown in for good measure – create an opportunity to score serious points with your sweetie by extending the year’s most romantic day.

Valentine’s Day – Feb. 14 - is on a Friday. Its landing on the last day of the work week opens the door to some serious “pre-game” groundwork by guys looking to impress their girlfriends, wives or other romantic interest, said Rhonda Deaver, owner of Snapdragon Flowers of Elm Grove.

“A guy who is serious about his ‘pre-game’ will send a woman something on Monday or Tuesday of Valentine’s week, so that she can enjoy it well ahead of the Friday Valentine’s Day,” Deaver said. “Even better, send it to her workplace, so that her coworkers all see the gift, and tell her how lucky she is to have someone so thoughtful in her life.”

This proactive gesture allows a couple to enjoy all of Valentine’s week. Given that Valentine’s Day falls on a Friday, restaurants and other romantic haunts will likely be extra busy … and perhaps a less relaxed experience than hoped. Stretching out the mood all week – via smart “pre-game” planning – lessens the need for a flawless Friday.

Flowers are a bright, colorful Valentine’s Day gift that’s always welcomed. While the traditional “dozen red roses” is fine, Deaver encouraged floral customers to consider other options.

“Roses have a reputation for not lasting, and the reason is practical: Being long-stemmed, they don’t absorb as much water as many other flowers,” she said. “It’s OK to use roses as part of a Valentine’s Day bouquet. Work with your florist to create a lively mixed arrangement that incorporates other flowers with different colors and textures.”

Knowing the recipient’s favorite color, and matching it with flowers, shows extra sincere interest that will be noticed, Deaver said. If it’s a newer relationship, and you’re unsure exactly what to send, a florist can put together an enticing arrangement that conveys affection without going overboard.

Love is love, too - don’t forget Mom and Grandma in Valentine’s Day outreach. And yes, Deaver noted, it’s OK for a woman to send flowers to a man. Just make them eye-catching, without being “pretty.”

“Order your flowers sooner to get exactly what you want,” she said. “A Valentine’s calendar like this doesn’t happen often, so enjoy the chance to extend Valentine’s week into an extra memorable time.”
