Twenty-year-old Richard de la Cruz, of Wauwatosa, drowned in Lake Mendota in Madison on Wednesday, according to Patch's media partners at WISN 12 News.
De la Cruz planned to attend UW-Madison this fall, according to WISN 12 News.
"We offer our thoughts to his friends and family during this difficult time," said UW-Madison Dean of Students Lori Berquam. "It is an unimaginable loss and one that comes just before the start of a new school year."
