This summer, The Whitefish Bay Community Band will celebrate its 30th year of outdoor summer concerts for the Village of Whitefish Bay. This celebration begins when the band joins the WFB Civic Foundation ice cream social on June 14 - followed by a special celebration concert in Klode Park on June 28. Included with that concert will be a band name change to THE VILLAGE BAND of WFB. Celebration year concerts will follow on Wednesday evenings in Old School House Park - July 19 plus Aug 2 and 9 ( another Ice Cream Social). The Foundation has been very much a part of the Band’s history and support going back to the Band’s founder Wade Mosby (non musician ) who - having finished 3 terms as a Foundation director in 1986 and feeling the Village was missing something - decided to have a band . Wade persuaded George Hardy ( musicians) to take on the musical part of making a band work while he did the rest. Wade reorganized the band in 1998 after a year of inactivity with the help of George and Wally Just. George is still playing tuba in the back row while Tom Mohr - charter member and former President - sits right in front of George with his trombone. And there is the Village support - especially the Dept of Public Works who provides the tent, chairs and power for the concerts.
Volunteers made up the band for years - with the recent growth factor being the addition of a professional director which looks to the WFB High School Band Director. Stanford Luth - retired WFB HS Band Director will lead the Band celebration year for his second season. Goals include establishing the band as an opportunity for High School students to continue their music in the summer while encouraging others to find their instruments and play.
