World Migratory Bird Day Coming To Whitefish Bay This Spring
The Village Board recently proclaimed May 8, 2021 as World Migratory Bird Day, offering a chance to celebrate birds and educate the public.
WHITEFISH BAY, WI —Since 1993, World Migratory Bird Day (WMBD) has been celebrated in the Western Hemisphere during the second weekend in May. In 2021, those celebrations are coming to Whitefish Bay.
On Jan. 18, Julie Siegel, president of the Whitefish Bay Village Board, issued resolution No. 3082, proclaiming May 8, 2021 World Migratory Bird Day in the village. The resolution called the occasion a chance to foster appreciation for wild birds and said it also should serve as a call to action.
"I urge all citizens to celebrate this observance and to support efforts to protect and conserve migratory birds and their habitats in our community and the world at large," Siegel wrote in the resolution.

The resolution touted many positive qualities of migratory birds like: their beauty, their songs being symbolic harbingers of spring, their role in controlling insect pests and their helping to generate millions of recreational dollars statewide.
But the resolution also made clear the WMBD observance would be an opportunity to raise awareness about migratory bird conservation.

"Migratory birds and their habitats are declining throughout the Americas, facing a growing number of threats to their migration routes and in both their summer and winter homes," the resolution stated. "Public awareness and concern are crucial components of migratory bird conservation."
The resolution stated that since 1993, WMBD has focused attention on the nearly 350 species of migratory birds. The occasion has traditionally been marked by gatherings in town squares, community centers, schools, parks, nature centers and wildlife refuges, and those events have been about education, taking action and simply having fun.
