Goose Interrupts Spring Training Game Between Chicago And Arizona

A goose flew onto the outfield at Salt River Fields in Scottsdale during a game between the Cubs and Diamondbacks.

SCOTTSDALE, AZ — A goose took a gander at spring training on Sunday when it interrupted a game in Scottsdale between the Chicago Cubs and Arizona Diamondbacks.

The foul up was caught on camera during a televised game on Fox Sports Arizona with the goose making itself comfortable in the outfield at Salt River Fields. Throughout the second inning Cubs outfielder Rafael Ortega could be seen constantly looking over his shoulder at the bird as the game continued.

At one point during the game the goose even attacked another goose that tried to get onto the field. No players were harmed, according to Fox Sports.

Diamondbacks Manager Torey Lovullo told the sports network the goose made him “a little nervous” when one of his players, Ketel Marte, played outfield with the bird still around.

“[Marte] can manage that space pretty well, he can probably outrun [the goose] right now,” he said.

This wasn't the first time wildlife has interrupted a baseball game.

A swarm of bees interrupted a spring training game in 2015 between the Kansas City Royals and Los Angeles Angels, according to USA Today. A bald eagle harassed a pitcher as the national anthem played before game in 2018 between the Minnesota Twins and Seattle Mariners.

Another bird-related incident happened during a game in 2018 between the Detroit Tigers and the Los Angeles Angels when a goose flew onto the field at Comerica Park. Employees at the stadium chase after the bird which eventually flew into a scoreboard.

The bird was dubbed the Rally Goose by the Tigers on social media.

Sunday’s game in Arizona ended without further incident from the goose with the Diamondbacks winning 5 to 4.
