Scottsdale Nonprofit Flooded With Donations After Nextdoor Post

SCOTTSDALE, AZ — A post on a Nextdoor neighborhood page flooded a Scottsdale nonprofit with donations in November.

Family Promise, which helps homeless families in the Valley find housing and become self-sufficient, told ABC 15 that a post on the page led to 160 offers of donations to the cause.

Lisa Randall, a spokesperson for the nonprofit, said that the post came about after a social worker noticed they were running low on towels; each family gets a set when they seek help from Family Promise. So, Randall turned to her neighbors.

"I thought I’d get 10, 20, maybe 30 people to respond," she said. "I was surprised at the sheer volume."

More than 160 people contacted Family Promise, asking where to deliver towels and other necessities, including paper towels, soap, toothpaste and pillows. Others asked if they could donate money to help families struggling amid the coronavirus pandemic.

Family Promise typically partners with Valley churches that give families temporary shelter until the nonprofit can find them a home. With many churches closed due to the pandemic, Family Promise is housing families themselves. It helped more than 130 families get off the streets in 2020.

"These gifts have not only helped the families we're serving now, but our shelves are stocked and they will continue to bless families currently in our program and those that are yet to come,” Randall said.
